Faculty Activities: John Tagg at RIT

On January 31, Professor John Tagg gave the William A. Kern Lecture at Rochester Institute of Technology. The lecture was jointly sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences and discussed the emergence of photo theory and new kinds of theoretically informed photographic practice in Britain in the 1970s–a decade of social conflict and political activism in which the impact of new social forces, new forms of theoretical writing and new forms of social mobilization changed the conception of the place of the political and put a new emphasis on “the politics of representation.”

While at RIT, Tagg also led a seminar with students from the MFA in Photography and the BFA program in Photographic Arts. The exchange led to positive plans for future collaborations between Binghamton and both RIT and George Eastman House in Rochester, which houses the largest collection of photographs and photographic equipment in the world.
