Lear Gallery is pleased to present the work of sculptor Ronald Gonzalez.

The exhibition, titled Soul Searching, showcases a selected series of scaled-down versions of blackened figures, made from the artist’s characteristic skeletonized armatures and decaying objects.

The exhibition consists of 60 works that are prototypes and studies for life-size figures. The sculpture casts light on the artist’s longstanding habit of working in piecemeal practice where groups of figures are scaled up and down in size as part of the artist’s studio practice and process for developing ideas. In this intimate cast of characters, ordinary small objects become frightening and grotesque as they emerge from their vaporous black surfaces, suggesting foreboding and a memento mori spirit.

Gonzalez’ distressed and ominous works explore the lost and found essence of objects and their connection to the transitory nature of human existence, where forms are elucidated in darkness. His plethora of assembled beings reflect his obsessive search for the stuff of life, loaded with the wear-and-tear qualities of experience he distills into metaphors of empathy, sardonic humor and loss.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday June 1, 5:00-8:00pm
